Conventions of a Thriller:
- Antagonist
- Protagonist
- Tension
- Suspense
- Questions?
In our Thriller opening we used a lot of these conventions to make sure our opening fit perfectly within the Thriller genre. Because the opening is a very important part in a Thriller movie because it is there to hook the audience in, we tried to make our opening raise questions and create some tension.
Our film opening is not clear what is going on but that is a very good thing to have because you get the audience asking themselves questions and confusing them. Even through the cuts we are still unsure what is going on, we can only guess. As i am cutting up letters that spell out "death" we can only assume that i am the Antagonist and Matt is the Protagonist.
9 Frame Sequence
The first shot we see, by looking at the storyboard, a close up of a timer counting down from 2 minutes. This automatically starts to raise questions to the audience which is what we were aiming to do; Why is it counting down? What is going to happen when it finishes? Where is this timer? The shot is in a close up which restricts the narration as we do not know where about this timer is and why is it counting down? This will interest the audience as they will want to know what is going to happen when the timer has finished. There is not a lot we can say about this shot, we can see that the clock is digital and might be connect to some sort of bomb, we are unsure? What ever is going to happen we know that its going to happen in two minutes. The shot is in silence which creates some tension and could mean no one is around the timer, at the moment. The lighting in this close up is very vague as we cant see anything except from the time, by looking at the reflection from the light, we could start to think that it is in some sort of room. The parallel non diegetic sound track fits in with the film as it is creepy and even this creates a mood to the audience as we are able to scare them and put them on the edge of there seats. This shot was a good example of parallel editing as we cut from this to another shot, in a different location, back to this throughout the scene.
The close up of this foot was used so we didn't give any off the characters identity away. Because we didn't give any identity away we raise questions by this; Who is this?, What does he/she look like?, Where are they? By looking at this shot, we see some mud and grass, which shows that he/she are outside and by the lack off grass and the mud, this is a place where people know about. The shoe of the character is a grey dark boot which could start questioning the gender, is it a male by this? And the jeans, are they mens jeans? The lighting in this shot is high key, which sets a time, we now know this is daylight. The location is still unknown but this starts to carry on raising questions and suspense. The diegetic sound used in this shot, are footsteps of the character stepping down and as you hear, there is no one else's voice around him. In post preduction we used the match on action effect to make sure the foot was the same one as he stepped down. The pace of this shot was sped up to make it look like he was in a rush and by cutting into a close up we used the diegetic sound.
The extreme close up of the scissors cutting still makes it unknown on where this character is. The lighting in this shot is very low key which could ask; Is it night? Is it a room in the dark? Where is he/she? The props used in this shot are some newspapers, which later on realise it is a Daily Mail paper. The scissors show they are very sharp and could be used to hurt someone. Like a common Thriller antagonist, sharp objects lead to death to another. The diegetic sound used is the sound of the scissors cutting through the paper and the volume of the scissors is quite load which could mean business. The facial expressions and body language still cannot be recognised, same with the clothing and hair.
The close up panning shot here, shows a lot more about the mise en scene. We start to pan across the location of where the character is standing with no one around in sight, could mean he wants to be by himself, or no one wants him around. We can see the character is standing on top of some hill, unsure where about he is, but this shows that he is in high key lighting, daylight, and because he is up so high, he might be hiding from someone and scared. The hair is dark brown and seems to be short, therefore we can probably guess the character is male, but we are only guessing. The red balloon that he is holding could show emotion within the character, is he mad? is he angry? is he in love? is he in danger? The colour of the balloon makes it stand out more as the rest is quite dark green colours, so this may be a very important prop in the film. The way the balloon is shaking around and the digetic sound of the wind shows that it is quite a depressing day.
The titling scene we were unsure what to do about. We came up with writing "Red Balloon" on the balloon and record it for a while in different shots. We cropped one of our shots to make it a close up low angle shot of the balloon so it took up most the frame. We decided to place the names at the bottom left corner, in a creepy font and faded them in and out, one after another. By looking at the background we see that the high key lighting means the character outside is holding this and the diegetic sound of the wind shows that its certainly him. There are still many questions to be asked and answered here and suspense is till rising here.
The extreme high angle long shot here, shows the character is isolated and on a very high hill. We can tell this because of where the character is located in the frame. The clothing of the character shows he is wearing a trench coat which are very expensive pieces of clothing but also could be related to unfashionable and not seen around a lot. The shot focus pulls from the wire at the front to the character at the back. The wire could represent that the character does not want anyone around him and not to be disturbed. The high key lighting is still being used in this shot and the red balloon is still being held by him, but why? The houses at the bottom could be where the other character is located, we are unsure about this because of the lack of mise en scene in the other shots. The digetic sound is still being used here of the wind. This all creates Enigma.
The extreme close up high angle shot is being used here showing the character ripping pages out the newspaper. If we relate this back to the cross cut between this character and the timer, he could be running out of time and doesn't have the time to carefully snip them out anymore. By this no clothing is being shown, low key lighting is still being used and no body/ facial language is being shown, so we are still guessing. The cuts are getting quicker and quicker as the timer gets close to 0 and this raised suspense. The foley sound being used is from the ripping of the paper which we recorded at the time of the recording
The medium low angle shot here, show the red balloon blowing in the wind with the character in the bottom right corner of the frame. The character has very low key lighting on him to block the identity. The light from the sun gives a great effect from the balloon when it gets blocked by it. We are now up to a point where we just want to know what this means and what is going to happen. From the pace of the cross cuts we know its nearly time before that timer reaches 0 and we want to know what is going to happen to this balloon.
The tilt up extreme long shot here, shows the whole location of the scene. We can see right into the distance where we see lots off little villages and towns. So we know that he is near people and maybe by the red balloon people will be able to see him and recognise him. The tilt up effect to the sky could indicate where the balloon is most likely to end up and that is if the timer reaches 0. From all these 9 shots we tried to make it seem like we are trying to build questions that the audience really wants to know the answer to, build suspense, not only to build it but keep on building it throughout and finally to keep the tension going.
2.How does your media product represent particular social groups?
In our thriller we only have two characters, but they represent certain social groups, such as:
Our film opening could present our characters in different groups but the audience is there to be questioned and make there own mind up. In our film i believe we are presenting Tom and Matt as:
Tom: A Upper Middle Class, Middle Aged, Straight White Male
Matt: A Middle Class, Middle Aged, Straight White Male
Social Class: Our Thriller shows Tom as upper middle class, meaning he has money. The scissors are sharp as well, which could imply that he has just bought them because he has the money. Matt we see that he is wearing a trench coat which indicates he has money and the boots he is wearing as well.
Gender
We only represent one gender in our thriller and that is male. More a typical male hate relationship. Tom doesn't like Matt so he sends him a death letter. The gender is shown through costume mainly. Matt's costume shows a trench coat, jeans and boots. Something a man would wear on a wet, rainy day. With the masculinity of the characters, we see that he is not writing a love poem to someone, he is creating a death threat. The clothes that Matt is wearing are dark, black and threatening. The way Tom snips out letters from a newspaper and the way he starts to rip them out, implies he knows what he is doing, everything is deliberate which can be associated with manliness. Matt's hair is also used to show that he is a middle class man by the way it is neatly presented.
Age: Tom and Matt is meant to be a middle aged men. Age is kept a mystery due to the fact we do not see facial expressions really. Our Thriller is shows this by some clothing but i believe we should of shown it by location a bit more as well. If we had shown it by location we could of presented it a lot better. But by clothing i think we have presented it well, by the trench coat, jeans and boots and also the props with the newspaper being the Daily Mail.
Films can be distributed anywhere these days through,
- Digital
- In Cinema
Digital release is becoming bigger and bigger as the days go on because it is cheaper for companies to stick the film on an internet based software such as Itunes and people can download them. These are mainly films that do not reach the Cinemas.
Distributors can advertise anywhere really, in shops, magazines, television, social network sites, in cinema and many more. But this has to be decided by there target audience because putting a romantic film in a music magazine won't be the best idea. As our film is a Thriller, I believe putting a page in Mens Health Magazine, Gamer Magazines and many more magazines aimed at young adults. Placing a trailer in the middle of a show such as Lost, will get people who watch that, see our trailer and will think about seeing the film, also by placing a trailer before Thriller films at the cinema will attract our audience.
There are many places to consume films these days such as:
Before Internet came out, the best place to consume a film was DVD/VHS, since the discovery of Internet, companies have been created to stream films off the internet such as LoveFilm and Netflix. This allows the user to stream a film onto the PS3, XBOX, PC and TV. This is a very easy way to grab a film at an instant, this is why it is becoming more popular. Some films who have a low budget release the films on Youtube, ITunes and even Facebook. This is a much cheaper way and if you are lucky to get the word of mouth going, this can even be bigger then releasing to DVD. For our film i would think the best way to get the film onto the market is Itunes, this way people can purchase it for a cheap price and it will be very cheap for us to place it onto the market. I am going to rely on word of mouth to get more people purchase the film.
There are many media institutions out in the world at the moment and some our bigger than others. Below is a list of film institutions i have researched and found out about:
These film companies aim thier the high concept films and the block busters. Films created by these release their films on the Fridays at mainstream cinemas, such as Odeon. This is because it is the start of the weekend and the audience will spend thier lesiure money. Low concept films, will release there films on the wednesday which is a good idea because with Orange Wednesday around, people will use this to go see a film.
As Playstation is aimed at mainly teens and younger adults i think the audience we are aiming at will be interested. We know this by the games produced, such as Resident Evil and Dead Rising. I believe that Sony Pictures is a good institution to distribute our product because they are known all around the world. Sony would be good because they develop and create some off the best home technology devices known to date such as:
- Playstation
- BluRay Players
- Televisions
- Mobiles
- Speakers
Because off this, Sony lovers around the world will hear about the movie quickly though the brilliant advertising and marketing Sony produce. I don't believe Walt Disney would be a very good institution to pick as people relate to Disney by cartoon films and cheesy films, even though it has produced good action films, such as Pirates Of The Caribbean.
Because our Thriller is a British film, we are going to have a British distributor, i have researched a list of British Film companies that could be used:
As our film is a British film, i would prefer our film to be created by Film Four because they are known for there excellent films and they are known. This will also help advertisement because Channel 4 will hopefully advertise it.
This video below shows the Xbox 360 dashboard and shows what film apps they have available, also NetFlix is on the system now.
4.Who would be the audience for your media product?
The audience for our Thriller opening i believe is younger adults and teenagers. To decide this we compared our films with several other Thrillers to see what age group there films were watched by. Also i went round asking family and friends, different ages, what type of films they watch. By putting the results in some graph, we were able to compare and come up with a result. Also setting up a poll of Facebook made it easier to find the suitable target audience.
Graph showing films that people are interested in:
Graph showing films that males like to watch:
Graph showing age group which find Thrillers more appealing:
By looking at this graph it shows that younger adults find Thrillers more appealing then the older age, therefore it was best to aim our audience to this age group.
I have researched a list of films the audience would be interested in and this is how we went by creating our opening :
- Se7en - Character snipping up some pictures, letters in a secret location with the identity hidden
- Jaws - Non Diegetic sound used to create suspense and tension, such as the soundtrack from the volume building up
- The Dark Knight - Lack of identity in the start with the robbers, which questions the audience
5.How did you attract/address your audience?
I believe that using two males, who have a hatred against each other, is bound to result is some good action. Younger people like the idea of suspense and tension, for instance, The Dark Knight, one of the best Thriller films created, younger people liked the fact that using two males as a protagonist and antagonist would result in a good quality thriller movie.
Even though the opening of our movie is slow, this creates suspense to the audience and the fact the timer ticking down gives a great tension effect as everyone wants to know what is going to happen when it reaches 0.The pace of the edits speed up which will put our audience on the edge of their seats as the timer ticks down, which will get the heart beat getting quicker and quicker, creating suspense and tension, which we aimed by using close ups, fast editing and using the fact of lack of identity (helped by the camera angles and lighting) would of helped attract the audience by asking questions to them. The use of the non diegtic sound would of distracted the audience because it is creepy and dark and this would attract the younger people as it may of put them in the characters positions, which i believe the audience likes to do. The parallel editing of this would attract the audience due to the pace of the edits. The quicker the parallel editing is, the more chance the audience is going to be wanting to see the rest of the film.
By placing our video onto Blogger, YouTube and Facebook, we were able to ask our target audience to comment on the film. With time, we were able to get a few comments from people such as:
- I like the countdown effect and the fact its going from one person to the other, gives it a good effect for a thriller
- that was really good! i really liked the general contrast you had, with the red balloon that has childish connotations, comapred with the articles about the Taliban, and the guy with the big black coat who looks very mysterious (nice use of mis en scene!) i also thought the fade from the balloon to the alarm was really good, as it reinforced the contrast, and it also made us ask the question as to why this balloon is significant :)
6.What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
Script: I have learnt so many different types of technology during the making of Red Balloon, for instance. This was the first time using a Sony HDR XR550V camera, so i did not have a clue about the features. During the making i was able to set white balance, look back on previous recording and obviously able to record. Also whist using the camera i was able to use the Tripod which helped keep the camera in a fixed position and was able to help us in the panning shots. With the shots in the dark, we were able to use some lighting equipment which was fiddly at times but once you got the hang of it, it was easy to produce high and low key lighting. In the the editing process we were able to use Apple Macs which i found really difficult to use as, i use a PC on a regular basis. Using Final Cut Pro was difficult for me to start with because it was a brand new software i had never used before. But with time i was able to cut shots, render the video and add effects, such as text, fades and dissolves. I learnt how to create good parallel editing and shot reverse shots. The match on action effects were hard to get perfect in timing, but with help with cutting the clips at the perfect time, was easier as the editing went on. After the film was produced, we imported the film into a software called GarageBand which was also a new software. This was difficult as the software didn't have specific sounds we wanted. But by learning how to add soundtracks to the video, we blending two tracks together which gave the effect we wanted. This allowed us to also get some good sound effects which we were able to put onto the film to make the sound diegetic and non diegetic. I also learnt how to create foley effects with a sound recorder, even though we did not use this in our film. Importing the video to the blog was easy because i have used blogger before and the layout is very simple. This was also same for importing it to YouTube. Overall i believe i have learnt a huge amount with technology.
7.Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learned in the progression from it to the full product?
Since the making of our preliminary task i have progressed a lot through the use of technology, the use of the camera, sound and editing.
When constructing our characters, i was not to sure what ways would help this. I now know that using aspects of mise en scene, sound, editing and camera work, makes it more easy to construct the character. Even though in our preliminary we designed a very good character going for an interview, it was simple and this was a lot more complicated. Due to the fact that we did not show facial expressions lighting was critical, also was camera work, because we used very low key lighting to hide the characters facial emotion but enough light to show what he was doing. With camera work, i now fully understand what effect angles give to the character, eg. high angle can show someone looking down on them, also with shot distance we are able to see that the character is lonely.
Continuity Editing was used in both our preliminary and thriller editing and were very helpful. In the preliminary i learned the basics of using shot reverse shot and the 180 degree rule. The match on action played a part when the character steps down onto the grass, we did not want the wrong foot being placed down first, therefore we had to get this right. By shooting in the same day made it easier because lighting would of been the same throughout.
Camera work, this was a problem during the preliminary, as i was the actor, therefore i could not use the camera and record. During this, i was able to record some shots in one the characters locations which let me have some input on what shots i wanted and liked.
In our Thriller opening we did not use any shot reverse shots, compared to our preliminary, this was mainly due to the fact we did not have any diologue. We used a more sophisticated setting for your thriller, in our prelimiary we did not do this. We also used more then one location, we used 3, which made more work for us with the lighting. Also as we were outside we had to make sure the weather did not change.
Overall i am very happy of what we created, when you watch the preliminary and Red Balloon there is a vast improvement with Mise En Scene, Camera Work, Editing and Lighting.
